Brian Barth: A Different Sort of Urbanism: Homelessness as an Opportunity to Build Community

Brian Barth, author of the newly published book Front Street: Resistance and Rebirth in the Tent Cities of Techlandia, joins the Center for Public Interest Design for a community-building conversation about homelessness. Barth, a journalist with a background in urban planning, will be joined by three characters from the book -- John, Monte and Leajay, members of Wood Street Commons, a collective of unhoused activists from Oakland -- whose "homeless helping the homeless" approach flips the script on current public policy debates around the issue. The group will share solutions pioneered by unhoused communities themselves with important implications for those working in the design professions.

The CPID Talks are aimed at fostering a dialogue about interesting work being done that is relevant to the public interest design field by inviting speakers from a wide variety of disciplines to share their work. This talk will be held in the in the CPID Office School of Architecture at PSU (Shattuck Hall 201). Following the talk, attendees are invited to participate in a discussion on the work. We hope you'll join us.
